How to Wash and Maintain Your Swimsuit

There’s still a little summer left, but your swimsuit might not think so. Here are some tips for keeping your swimsuit in pristine condition from NJ Laundromats.

You worked out all winter for the perfect beach body. And now that you can shimmy your way into that new swimsuit, you’ll want make sure it looks as good as your beach-going bod.

Wash your swimsuit by hand.

The most important thing to remember about washing your bathing suit is to avoid putting it in the washing machine. Even on the lowest setting, a machine can ruin the shape or padding of the suit.

It’s best to roll up your sleeves and wash by hand the old fashioned way. Here’s a quick breakdown of the proper way to handle your bathing garments:

  • Rinse the bathing suit in cold water before washing to remove oils, lotion, dirt or sand
  • Use a mild, nonabrasive soap when washing in cold water by hand
  • Squeeze out excess water. Do not ring or twist
  • Lay flat to dry in a dark, ventilated room
  • Do not put it in the dryer

But I don’t want pruney hands!

Okay, we know that washing by hand can seem a bit dated. If you have a true disdain for washing by hand, you can toss your swimsuit into the wash every four or five uses. Just don’t do it too often.

When you do use a machine, make sure you remove the padding from bikini tops and only wash them with other bathing suits or towels. The towels reduce the effects of agitation on your beach gear.

Also, ensure that the water temperature is at its coldest and avoid using too much detergent.

Keep your swimsuit looking like new.

Above all, it’s important to keep your beach apparel looking like new. Here are a couple ways to keep the colors locked in:

  • Soak your new suit in one tablespoon of vinegar to one quart of water to lock in colors
  • When you’re finished with your bathing suit, avoid putting it in a plastic bag; it will cause the colors to run

Now’s the time to hit the beach in style! Have fun out there, and we’ll see you on laundry day at one of our many locations.
