The Skinny on “Unshrinking” Your Clothes

Clothes feeling a bit snug due to shrinkage? There are methods to get them back to normal.

We’ve all put a favorite sweater in the dryer for too long or washed with hot water when we should have used cold.

And our clothes have had to bare most of the brunt. Luckily, all hope is not lost. In some cases, you can “unshrink” clothes.

Here’s how —

Knits

  1. Fill a sink or basin with one quart of warm water
  2. Mix in one tablespoon of baby shampoo or hair conditioner
  3. Allow the garments to soak for about 30 minutes
  4. Wring out the majority of water
  5. Roll garments in between two towels, wring them out, gently pulling to stretch the garment again
  6. Air dry

Wools and Cashmere

  1. Fill a sink or basin with one quart of warm water
  2. Mix in one tablespoon of borax OR ½ a quart of vinegar
  3. Soak the garment for about 25 minutes
  4. Wring out the majority of water
  5. Roll garments between two towels and, while wrapped, thrash the garment around, naturally stretching the fibres – do not actively pull
  6. Air dry

Denim

  1. Fill a bathtub about ⅓ of the way full with lukewarm water
  2. Put on the jeans, buttoning them and zippering them
  3. Soak yourself, wearing the jeans
  4. Move around in the wet jeans, focusing on areas desired to be stretched out, for upwards of an hour
  5. Remove and air dry (you can use a towel to dry yourself)

Just because your shirts or pants get a bit snug doesn’t necessarily mean they’re lost forever. Using this collection of tips, you’ll be sure to get every extra inch out of your clothes.
