How to Properly Wash a Bathing Suit

So you’ve just enjoyed a day at the beach or in the pool, and now it’s time to wash your bathing suit. Do you know what to do?

First of all, let us just tell you that yes, you do in fact need to wash your bathing suit every now and then. Pool chemicals can take their toll on bathing suit fabric, as can salt water, sunscreen and sand. And since bathing suits can be a pricey purchase, it behooves you to know how to properly clean this article of clothing.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to properly wash your swim suit:

  1. Soak it in cool water first: You should do this after every swim, but it’s especially important to do before you wash your bathing suit. This will help get any pool chemicals, sand and salt off of it.
  2. Hand wash it: After you’ve let it soak, refill a laundry tub with cool water and toss in a tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent. Don’t use powder detergent, as the granules may not dissolve fully in the water. Hand wash by soaking and swishing your bathing suit. Then, rinse it.
  3. Repeat and dry: After you’re done with this, turn your swimsuit inside out and soak and swish again. Then, rinse it, gently wring it out and let it dry. Make sure it’s laying in a flat position as it dries.

Additionally, there are several things you can do to prolong the life of your bathing suit. For instance, find a pool shower to rinse off in after each swim. Also, don’t let bathing suits dry in the sun, as UV rays can fade the fabric colors. Also, you might also try to sunbathe before swimming, as doing so avoids swimsuit damage from oils and lotions.
