How to Deal With Pesky Red Wine Stains

Red wine stains can drive you to drink, but a few quick home remedies applied to these stains can give you some peace of mind.

We all have that one friend who manages to get more on them than in them when it comes to food and drink.

Red wine can reek absolute havoc in your home on furniture, rugs, and clothing when the stains aren’t dealt with immediately.

We have an easy, 5-step process for helping get rid of those pesky stains:

  1. Using a clean dry cloth, dab the stain to absorb the excess wine. DO NOT RUB! Rubbing the stain will simply spread it and deepen the stain as well.
  2. Cover the entire area of the stain with cool water. The coolness from the water will help it from soaking in as warm water will cause the fibers of the cloth or rug to expand.
  3. Apply a liberal amount of table salt to the affected area. Let the salt briefly sit and absorb some of the wine. You should begin to see the stain turn a pinkish hue.
  4. Boil water and carefully pour the water on the stain from a height of about 6-8 inches. At this point in the process, you should see the stain fully lift from the material.
  5. If the stain persists, apply a solution of one part vinegar, two parts water. Upon application, allow the solution to sit and then dab dry with a clean dry cloth.

There you have it! A simple way to remove red wine stains from most fabrics. If there are still remnants of the stain, redo the process over once again.

Remember, the most important part of dealing with a red wine stain is acting quickly! Time is the enemy, so make sure that when the glass drops, you are ready and waiting.
