How Much is Too Much?

When doing your laundry, it’s always important to strike that perfect balance with your loads. Just a few articles of clothing wastes resources and detergent that you could have been using on larger ones. Yet, if you overload your washer and dryer, the potential for problems looms large. Here’s a look at why you don’t want to overload your laundry:

  • Clothes won’t clean as well: Overloading your washing machine means clothes are jammed together and have less room to move around inside the drum. As a result, detergent won’t disperse quite as equally. This becomes a problem, as not all of your clothes will receive the cleaning they likely need. Bleach marks or streaks could even appear on some of your clothes.
  • Extra strain on machines: In addition to the impact it has on your clothes, overloaded machines also put excess stress on the equipment. Heavy loads can put more wear and tear on the appliance’s bearings, and even lead to malfunction. You don’t want to be replacing washing machines every few years around your home. At the same time, you don’t want to open up the washer at the laundromat to find that it hasn’t drained or spun your clothes properly. Yet, these are common realities.

So how much is too much? Here’s what you should do to ensure you’re not overloading. Check your washer manufacturer’s recommended weight limits. Then, place your laundry into a bag and weigh it to make sure you’re not over the limit. Additionally, make sure the laundry is evenly dispersed throughout the wash drum during each cycle. This ensures better balance in each load, and will ultimately lead to a better, cleaner load. Don’t underload and don’t overload — instead, search to find that perfect balance.
