How to Make Your Favorite Clothes Last Longer

Tips to save your clothes and your money

Let’s face it — buying new clothes can be hard on your wallet, especially when you’re trying to keep up with the latest trends.

There’s nothing worse than investing a whole week’s paycheck on threads and only getting one solid use out of them. That’s downright upsetting and takes a toll on your finances.

To help you save money and extend the life of your wardrobe, we’ve compiled a few tips for making your clothes last longer.

Winter and Summer Storage

Most of us live in areas of varying climates — cold in the winter and hot in the summer. When the seasons change, and it is time to store some clothes in the attic, here are a few simple reminders so the start of each new season is just as pleasant as the previous:

  • Store your garments in a clean area that is free of light. This prevents fading due to light exposure.
  • Make sure to thoroughly wash all clothes before storage. Residue from colognes, perfumes and deodorants has a tendency to sink in and discolor clothing.
  • Store knits rolled or flat. Avoid storing them on hangers as they will stretch or misshape the article of clothing.

Why Wash?

So you’re chowing down on a fresh bowl of spaghetti and meatballs when you splatter a little sauce on your new shirt. Rather than throwing the garment in the machine and washing it completely, utilize the many “to-go” cleaning/bleach products. These products cut down on the need to over wash clothing, which can lead to premature fading.

Don’t be afraid to carry around a lint roller too. Sometimes a quick roll over is just the ticket to having your clothes look fresh without washing.

Also, remember to use deodorant on the regular as well. If you smell nice and fresh, so will your clothes, and you won’t have to wash them as often. It’s simple and easy!
