Getting a Grip on Hand Washing Clothes

Some of our most delicate clothes require a bit more TLC and can’t just be thrown in with the rest of the laundry.

The best way to figure out whether or not an article of clothing should be hand washed is to check the tag for washing directions. More often than not, the inside tag will have specific directions for hand washing.

The following are some of the more common articles of clothing or fabric that require hand washing:

  • Gentle fabrics like silk, polyester or lace
  • Articles of clothing with accessories attached (beads, sequence, chunky buttons, etc.)
  • Undergarments (bras or socks)

Where to Start

Begin by separating your clothes by color as different colors are best washed in different temperature water.

Whites and lighter clothes require lukewarm water while darker colors wash better in cooler water.

Once you have separated your clothes, the hand washing may start.

Step-by-Step Hand Washing

If you are starting with whites or lights, for example, follow the proceeding tips:

  • Fill a tub or basin with lukewarm water
  • Add ¼ cup of detergent to the water
  • Place clothes in water and swish around with hands to loosen dirt
  • Focus directly on stained areas
  • Rub the fabric together around the stained areas thoroughly
  • Transfer to a second tub or basin with clean water
  • Hang dry

Washing in this fashion could be done exclusively by hand or a pole of sorts may be used. Once your washing water becomes dirty, immediately switch it out with fresh water.

Give yourself a hand!

Hand washing is really not that difficult. It just takes a little practice. Never let fear keep you from hand washing or you could end up ruining delicate clothes.
